Los Angeles, CA — Graphic designer Emily McDowell is a a 15-year survivor of Hodgkin lymphoma. She was 24 when she was diagnosed. “The most difficult thing about my illness was the fact that it was so lonely,” she said. “Friends and family either disappeared because they didn’t know what to say or well-intentioned people said the wrong thing.”
This Monday she launched a series of cards designed to overcome that alienation and isolation with more authentic support. You won’t find any “get well soon” platitudes in her Empathy Cards collection. Instead, you’ll find the perfect mix of completely straightforward and just the right amount of get-it funny.
In the first three days, McDowell received 3,000 orders. She’s also received lots of suggestions and ideas for new cards. Some of those will premiere in her December collection. Love these!
